Downtown Marquette Victorian architecture dates back to roughly 1840 to 1910, when America was exploring new approaches to building and design. Marquette, Michigan incorporated as a city in 1871, so many of the homes you'll find here are among the first built in Marquette County. Many people think of the "Queen Anne" style when they think of Victorian architecture but in fact the Victorian era produced many different styles of homes each with their own unique characteristics. Advancements in machine technology (industrialization age) meant that Victorian era builders could easily incorporate mass produced ornamentation such as brackets, spindles, and patterned shingles. It is part of what attracts us to the beautiful homes with their gingerbread trim, curved towers, and spindled porches. The last true Victorians were constructed in the early 1900s. The most popular Victorian styles spread quickly through widely published pattern catalogs. Many of the homes in Marquette County are homes ordered out of Sears, Roebuck & Company Catalogs. Builders often borrowed characteristics from several different styles, creating unique, and sometimes quirky, mixes.
